The projected completion date is tentatively scheduled for the end of October.

Health care has been discussed in the news a lot recently. More than likely the cost of health care will probably increase at the college. Tom reminded the members of the changes in pricing for health care in the new contract. Members who are enrolled in the Excellus Blue Enhanced plan were encouraged to change to the free Standard plan so that they would not incur any additional charges for health care. The increased pricing for the Enhanced plan will go into effect on January 1, 2011.

Columbus Day – Columbus Day is a paid CSEA Holiday. The College may ask CSEA employees to work because the college is open and classes are in session. The language in the contract for this holiday is ambiguous. Tom informed the members that if they want the day off but their supervisor is trying to force them to work, to contact a member of the Executive Board.

Workload – Many members are being over worked and aren’t taking breaks and are working through the lunch hour, etc. while the College is not filling open positions. We are not helping ourselves by doing extra work. Members should be compensated for doing extra work!

Interrogations by Supervisor – Members should ask for a CSEA rep whenever they feel like they are being interrogated by their supervisor – no matter what stage of the interrogation process they are in, i.e. time & attendance issues – being spoken to about being late vs. being disciplined for time & attendance. Robert spoke about the definition of when an interrogation becomes a discipline. Members are encouraged to document the date and time when they are first approached by their supervisor and they are encouraged to ask for a union rep as soon as possible in order to protect their rights.

Bess Watts, President, Local 828, spoke to the members on behalf of the Local. Bess thanked the members of the Negotiations Team for a job well done with negotiating the new contract. MCC’s new contract was outstanding compared to other contracts that have been negotiated across the county. Regardless of what is reported in the news, never apologize for what we have to non-union members of the community because we work hard for what we have. Bess thanked the members who marched in the Labor Day Parade on CSEA’s 100th Anniversary. Ove Overmyer updates the Local Blogspot (the CSEA Voice Reporter) at least 3-4 times per week. Members who are interested in becoming involved in various committees are encouraged to send their personal email address to Bess at besswhat@gmail.com for updates, etc. from the Local 828. The next Local meeting is scheduled for Nov. 4, 2010 at the Liberty Lodge in Webster and is open to all CSEA Local 828 members.

April announced the 50/50 Raffle Results: $54.50 was the 50/50 donation; $53.50 was the 50/50 prize awarded to Terry Bowman. The Executive Board also raffled off a number of CSEA items to the members.

Food Drive for Mott's Workers on Strike in Williamson, N.Y.

CSEA Unit 7402 wants to show support for the brothers and sisters of Union RWDSU Local 220 with the donation of non-perishable food items, personal hygiene items, and paper products. (7/16/2009) – A “new” vehicle at Monroe Community College is turning heads around campus, but you won’t find this model in any showroom.

Dubbed the Trash Master, the modified, two-door Chevy Cavalier is the Facilities team’s unique solution for a vehicle equipped not only to collect all sorts of trash and provide the driver with heat and comfort during inclement weather but also promises to deliver significant cost savings in upkeep.

“The car was a farfetched idea, but it’s worked very fine,” said Ron Fess (Rochester), supervisor of campus grounds. “So far, so good.”

For nearly 15 years, the Facilities team used a utility vehicle that was retrofitted to collect trash, leaves and other debris around the 300-acre Brighton Campus. The vacuum unit – a leaf vac that was refashioned to discard paper, plastic and other objects – was efficient, but the vehicle became too costly to maintain. The unconventional use of the vehicle constantly on asphalt, rather than on grass, frequently wore out the tires and damaged the axles. With no doors on the vehicle, the driver also was regularly exposed to inclement weather.

Ingenuity of the Facilities team solved all its problems earlier this year. The team spent a month retrofitting the used sedan donated by Hoselton Chevrolet in Perinton.

“There were no blueprints or drawings. It’s kind of, ‘Oh we’ll start here and see where it takes us,’ ” Paul Pfenninger (Chili), auto mechanic at MCC, said about retrofitting the campus-owned vehicle with the help of staff horticulturist Greg Nickason (Webster). They helped solidify the design concept after Fess shared his vision with them.

“From a mechanical standpoint, it’s a lot better than the old equipment. It doesn’t require as much service. Parts aren’t breaking down as often,” Pfenninger said. “The tires on the old equipment are not designed for roadway use. We were changing tires every six to eight weeks and changing axles three times a year.”

A powerful vacuum motor on the unit allows the driver, using the suction hose, to pull in wet leaves, glass bottles, unopened soda cans and plastic milk jugs. Shredded or crushed debris is forced out through a discharge chute into a 50-cubic-foot covered metal receptacle, manufactured by Facilities workers. The container design makes it a breeze to empty the collected trash. The capacity of the metal receptacle is large enough to hold four days’ worth of trash.

“You can’t buy it like that. They don’t sell them in boxes. We made all this stuff on our own,” Fess said about the container.

Michael Wichtowski (Greece), a motorized equipment operator at MCC, hopes the vehicle will last another 100,000 miles. Wichtowski is the main operator of the car. Ten other people, who also spend two to three hours a day picking up trash on campus, use campus-owned golf carts to do their job. Garbage pickup accounts for one-third of the crew’s daily workload.

“The new vehicle is user-friendly; it makes the route a lot quicker to do. And it has heat for the winter,” Wichtowski said with a smile, a stark contrast to how he felt last winter, when he’d come in from his shift with frozen feet and his body covered with grime. “With this vehicle, the dust stays outside.”

General Membership Meeting

MONROE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
CSEA UNIT 7402
General Membership Meeting

When: Tuesday, August 18, 2009
5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Where: Carmen Clark Lodge
Brighton Town Park
777 Westfall Road

Food will be served!

Please RSVP your attendance by July 31st
to Melissa Burley at mburley@monroecc.edu or 292-2124.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name_________________________
Yes, I plan to attend ___
No, I do not plan to attend ___

How to File a Change of Address with CSEA

If your home mailing address has changed and your CSEA mailings are still being sent to your old address, contact Sylvia Lavin, Membership Chair (x3195, slavin@monroe...).
